MAdlug: Helping You Give Dignity To Children in Care
‘There are over 90,000 children in care in the UK and Ireland with one child entering the care system every 15 minutes. Most transport their worldly belongings in plastic bin bags or plastic shopping bags, losing their dignity in the process. We believe that no child should carry their life in a bin bag or plastic shopping bag. Life Goes Inside™ That’s why we created Madlug. We operate under a ‘buy one, give one’ model, which means that with every Madlug bag you purchase, a pack-away travel bag will be given to a child in care’ (madlug.com).
Having worked in a Children’s Home 20 years ago I was well aware of the horrific notion of children arriving into care with their belongings in bin bags. It really struck a chord with me and I always ensured that every child in our care was bought their own proper bag. When I heard about Madlug I just had to purchase one of their bags for our daily adventures.
When I posted an image from one of our adventures and tagged Madlug they asked if they could share it on their social media. I was both proud and delighted. I offered to collaborate with them and provide more images… and so the adventures continued.
Whilst photographing Keyworkers last year I met two of the most inspirational social workers I have encountered in some time… the truly awesome Dylan and Sinead. This terrific duo work in Hazelwood Integrated College supporting their vulnerable and care experienced young people. When I suggested that it might be fun to work together on a wee Madlug project they jumped at the chance. Check them out rocking it round Belfast City Centre
Make sure and check out the Madlug Organisation and think about them for your next school bag, day pack, adventure companion 🙂
